Hot Takes from Our Listeners

Now, let's get into today's hot takes. Jake and I posted a thread on Instagram asking for your most controversial opinions about photography. We've compiled some of the best (and spiciest) ones to discuss. So, without further ado, let's dive into your hot takes and share our thoughts!

Blurry Film vs. Blurry Digital

One hot take that caught our eye was about blurry photos: "Blurry film photos are cool and feel authentic to the style of photography. Blurry mirrorless DSLR photos are contrived, trendy, and not timeless. Clients will hate the photos in 10 years."

I have to say, I disagree with this one. If you're skilled at shooting film, your film and digital photos shouldn't look that different. Both can achieve that artistic, blurry effect if done correctly. I love the vibe that blurry film photos bring, but I think we should appreciate blurry digital photos too. After all, photography is about capturing a moment, and sometimes those moments are beautifully imperfect.

The Value of Styled Shoots

Another hot take was about styled shoots: "Styled shoots are the best way to break into the market. Without them, it can take years if you ever even get the right sellable subject matter."

I'm team styled shoots all the way. They are invaluable for building a portfolio, networking, and honing your creative skills. Yes, they can be seen as "fake" portfolios, but the connections and experience you gain are worth every penny. Styled shoots allow you to create the kind of work you want to attract, and that's incredibly powerful for your business.

Pricing for Experience

A listener mentioned, "It's wild to me that people with only two years of experience are charging $6-8K for weddings."

I understand where this comes from, but I believe in charging what you're worth. If you can provide value and your clients are willing to pay for it, then go for it. I've seen incredibly talented photographers in their second or third year who are worth every penny. The key is to continuously push yourself to grow and learn.

The Use of Flash

One of the most debated topics was about lighting: "Many Instagram-famous adventure elopement photographers have no idea how to light the inside of a room. On-camera flashes are not always the solution and can make your room look really cheap."

I completely agree that understanding lighting is crucial. Flash can be a powerful tool when used correctly. It's not just about having the right gear but knowing how to use it to enhance your photos. Being a master of light is essential in any photography genre, and it's something we should all strive to improve.

Final Thoughts

This has been so much fun, and I hope you've enjoyed our hot takes as much as we have. Remember, the goal of these discussions is to challenge ourselves and grow as photographers. Whether you agree or disagree with these hot takes, the important thing is to keep learning and pushing the boundaries of your creativity.
