EP 36: stories and insights from my mom, sylvia freeman

Hey everyone! Welcome to another episode of Summer School. I'm super excited to have a very special guest today – my mom, Sylvia Freeman. We had an awesome conversation about life, family, and photography, and I can't wait to share it with you.

Introduction to Summer Camp

Before we dive into the chat, I want to remind you about our upcoming workshop, Summer Camp, happening from June 17th to the 20th just outside of Palm Springs. It's the ultimate photography retreat designed to ignite your passion and level up your skills. If you'd like to come on the 16th, you're more than welcome!

At Summer Camp, we've got a lineup of workshops, styled shoots, and activities that will take your artistry to new heights. Dive deep into film with our Film Workshop, led by a local LA film lab, where we'll develop and scan the film together. We’ll also have a marketing class, a creative shooting technique class, an emulsion lift class, and so much more. With amazing food, poolside relaxation, and even more styled shoots, this is a workshop you do not want to miss. Plus, it's all about building connections and empowering you to thrive in your craft.

Meet My Mom, Sylvia Freeman

In today's episode, I'm super excited to have my mom, Sylvia Freeman, join us. My mom is from Georgia and just celebrated her big 60th birthday. She's got this cute southern accent and she’s hoping it won’t annoy anyone. My mom is beyond excited to become a grandma and loves the adventure life is taking her on. She jokes about trying to get me back to the South, but for now, she enjoys harassing me from afar.

Early Influences and Entrepreneurship

We dive into how my upbringing influenced my entrepreneurial journey. My mom fondly recalls how I was always crafting and selling things, from hair bows to paintings, to fund my trips and make money. She believes my business mindset started early, probably inherited from my dad, who also had big entrepreneurial dreams.

Photography and Creative Pursuits

My mom herself dabbled in photography, developing her own film in a darkroom. Even though she hasn't kept up with it, she loves reminiscing about her high school photography days. We discuss the technical aspects of photography, especially wedding photography, which requires being adaptable to various lighting scenarios and handling different photography styles.

Memorable Weddings and Unique Exits

One of the most memorable weddings I shot was for an older couple where the husband was battling cancer. It was a small, intimate wedding during COVID, and it highlighted the emotional depth and unique challenges of such events. We also talk about fun and chaotic weddings, and the importance of good coordination and a lively atmosphere.

Family Dynamics and Wedding Photography

Family dynamics play a huge role in wedding photography. I share my approach to managing family photos, emphasizing the need for a well-organized list and understanding family relationships to ensure smooth and enjoyable sessions.

Reflections on Hard Work and Pursuing Dreams

My mom reflects on the hard work and dedication required to pursue one's dreams. She shares her observations of my journey, from handling multiple jobs to making sacrifices to build my photography career. Her advice to aspiring photographers and entrepreneurs is to work hard, seek help when needed, and never give up on their dreams.

Final Thoughts

Our conversation wraps up with my mom offering heartfelt advice to anyone starting their journey. She emphasizes the importance of following your dreams, working hard, and seeking support when needed. Her wisdom and love shine through, making this episode a truly special one.

Thank you for joining us on this special episode of Summer School. If you enjoyed our conversation, please share it in your stories and help keep the podcast alive. Stay tuned for more inspiring episodes and insights from incredible guests. Until next time!
