EP 56: a chat with g&m photo and film: social media, posing, client experience, and more

Welcome back! I just wrapped up an amazing conversation with Georgia McMaster from G&M Photo and Film. We had so much fun talking about everything from posing techniques to creating real connections with clients.

Getting to Know Your Clients

For Georgia and her husband Micah, the secret to powerful photos is knowing the client beyond the basics. They go beyond just names—they dig into personalities, quirks, and stories to get a full picture of each couple. Georgia believes that the more relaxed and comfortable clients feel, the more authentic the photos will be. Every session starts with a consult call, even for quick engagement shoots. This extra step sets everyone up for a smooth, comfortable shoot with results that feel true to each couple.

Guiding Clients with Gentle Communication

Georgia’s approach to posing is all about gentle guidance. Rather than using strict commands, she gives prompts that feel natural, helping clients settle into poses that capture real emotions. Instead of saying “Look left,” she’ll guide them with a story—like imagining they’re seeing something beautiful in the distance. It’s a small shift, but it makes all the difference in creating a relaxed atmosphere. This method allows couples to stay in the moment, leading to photos that are both stunning and genuine.

Collaborating for a Unique Session

Georgia views engagement sessions as a collaborative canvas. She encourages clients to bring in mood boards that go beyond typical photos—they can include colors, textures, and even items that mean something personal. This way, both Georgia and the couple are aligned on the look and feel of the session. When the day arrives, every pose, location, and outfit choice feels intentional and true to the couple’s story, making the images that much more personal.

Practical Posing Tips

1. Be Open to Learning**: Posing isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. Georgia finds that the best poses come from reading each couple’s energy and being open to trial and error.

2. Experiment with Angles**: Don’t be afraid to get creative! Shooting from below, through tree branches, or from a unique perspective adds a fresh twist to traditional poses.

3. Encourage Real Interactions**: The most memorable shots often happen when couples are genuinely interacting with each other. Simple prompts like having them chat or share a joke can lead to candid, beautiful moments.

Building Your Brand on Social Media

Georgia and Micah have nailed using social media to build their brand and share their unique process. By showing behind-the-scenes content, they attract clients who connect with their style and open up opportunities for teaching, like their new posing course. Their social media presence is a great reminder of how consistency and authenticity build not only a brand but a community of clients and followers who truly value your work.

Keep Growing & Learning

Georgia’s approach to photography is a perfect reminder of the importance of staying curious and always pushing yourself. From courses to mentorships, she’s constantly evolving her style and skills. Next on her agenda? A dream trip to Finland with friends to catch the Northern Lights—a perfect mix of creativity and adventure to add a fresh spark to her work.

Thanks for joining today! I hope these insights into posing, client connection, and social media inspire you to try something new in your own work. Remember, every shoot is a chance to create something meaningful, and I love being on this creative journey with you all. Until next time, keep growing and exploring. Catch you in the next episode!
