EP 51: wedding day photo and video: how to work as a team with matt johnson

Hey everyone! Summer Grace here, and welcome back to another episode of Summer School! Today, I’m thrilled to bring you an awesome conversation with someone I’m sure many of you know and love—Matt Johnson. Matt’s a total rockstar in the videography world, and he’s here to share his journey, talk gear, and give some incredible tips for both videographers and content creators alike. If you’re interested in joining his upcoming workshop to help you book more gigs, head to get.whoismatt.com/workshop.

About Matt

Matt and his wife Rachel film weddings in Texas and around the country. They create stunning films that are not only beautiful, but are pushing the limits of creativity and quality. He also created whoismatt.com and has amassed over 400,000 subscribers on YouTube with tech tutorials, wedding filmmaking behind the scenes videos, and business advice. He has grown an incredible business and beard, and continues to wow couples with his wedding films.

How It All Started

Matt’s love for videography kicked off back in 2010 when he filmed his first wedding. While many photographers eventually make the jump to video, for Matt, videography was love at first sight. Fun fact: he’s only photographed four weddings! By 2015, he pivoted to YouTube to create educational content for videographers, and the rest is history. Now, he’s a go-to resource for so many aspiring videographers.

Fun at Camera Events

Matt’s no stranger to the world of camera events, and let me tell you—he thrives in them! From smaller Nikon meetups to huge Sony conventions with 500+ attendees, he’s been to them all. We had a good laugh about the different vibes at these events—Nikon tends to attract a quieter, more art-focused crowd, while Sony draws in a mix of extroverted influencers who are all about content creation.

Navigating the Creative Space

Matt finds himself balancing between the calm, skill-driven world of traditional photographers and the fast-paced, content-hungry energy of influencers. It’s been interesting to hear about this shift in the industry and how videographers are navigating their own paths.

Working with Photographers

If you’re a videographer and you’ve ever had a tricky day working with photographers at a wedding, Matt’s got some great advice. He makes sure to send a friendly pre-event email to photographers ahead of time, which sets a positive tone right from the start. It’s all about patience, kindness, and clear communication to make the day smoother for everyone. And if tensions arise? Matt’s learned how to stay professional while making sure he gets the shots he needs without stepping on the photographer’s toes.

Let’s Talk Gear

Of course, we couldn’t chat with Matt without diving into gear! He’s always hands-on with the latest camera tech, and he’s super excited about where things are headed. One of the big highlights? The rise of raw video, which is changing the game for videographers just like raw photography did for photographers. Whether you’re into Nikon, Sony, or Panasonic, Matt’s got something to say about the gear that’s pushing the industry forward.

Consistency Is Key

Matt’s also a big believer in consistency, especially when it comes to YouTube. If you’re trying to grow your channel, his advice is simple: post regularly! It doesn’t have to be every day, but sticking to a schedule—whether that’s weekly or bi-weekly—makes all the difference. And it’s not just about gear reviews—Matt’s all about creating hands-on guides and content that really helps people improve their videography skills.

What’s Next for Matt

Matt’s got some exciting projects coming up, including a workshop designed to help new videographers get bookings, plus a series of camera setup guides that’ll make your life a whole lot easier. He’s all about giving creators the tools they need to thrive—whether that’s understanding gear or mastering the business side of things.
